His Majesty Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II has designated a special day on his anniversary calendar to pay homage to the esteemed Queen mothers of Asanteman.
This unprecedented move underscores the integral role these women have played in the governance and cultural fabric of the kingdom.
Scheduled for April 22, the inaugural “Queen Mother’s Day” will be a momentous occasion celebrating the unwavering support and indispensable authority wielded by these revered figures throughout Otumfuo’s reign, which commenced on April 26, 1999.
Among the festivities planned is a vibrant food bazaar, showcasing the rich culinary heritage of Asanteman.
Preceding this historic celebration, the Manhyia Palace Auditorium will be inaugurated on April 15, 2024, symbolizing a new chapter in the kingdom’s cultural and administrative landscape.
This will set the stage for two separate durbars: one on April 21, dedicated to fetish priests and priestesses, and another on April 24, highlighting the diverse ethnic groups residing within Asanteman.
As the climax approaches, the eve of April 26 will be illuminated by spectacular firework displays at seven designated venues across Asanteman, including the Cultural Centre, Heroes’ Park, and Manhyia.
These festivities mark a quarter-century since Otumfuo ascended the revered Golden Stool, a symbol of Asante unity and sovereignty.
On the milestone day itself, April 26, a non-denominational thanksgiving service will be held at the Dwabrem grounds of the Manhyia Palace, followed by an anniversary dinner at the King’s residence in the evening.
Additionally, a captivating photo and video exhibition chronicling the illustrious reign of Otumfuo will be unveiled at the soon-to-be-commissioned Manhyia Palace Auditorium, offering a glimpse into the rich history and enduring traditions of Asanteman.
